houdan
breed origin: FRANCE
This old French breed is known for its fine meat and medium-large white eggs.
Cousins to the Crevecoeurs, Houdan's are also related to the Polish breed of chicken. Just like Polish and Crevecoeurs, Houdans are crested with fluffy 'dos and have a v-shaped comb (in the UK and Oz they have a butterfly comb). Houdans are unique, however, in having 5 toes and a beard.
Houdans have a friendly temperament and when grown are gentle and non-aggressive. Initially they can be timid but integrate well into mixed breed flocks. They're amenable to confinement and efficient in terms of food eaten to egg ratio.
The Mottled Houdan is the common variety, although a White Houdan is also recognised. This breed also occurs in a bantam form.
Because this med-large breed has a many desirability which makes them the perfect option to join your small backyard flock and /or as a pet (boys incl.)
