Length of life cycle:
Avg. 30-90 days but can live up to 1+ years
Once a flea has emerged from the cocoon, it will need to begin feeding from a host within a few hours. They are attracted by body heat, movement and exhaled carbon dioxide. Female fleas are not able to lay eggs until they obtain a blood meal. The flea feeds through a tiny, slender mouth part called the proboscis. Before feeding, it pumps saliva, which contains an anticoagulant, onto the skin. This prevents the blood from clotting, and the protein it contains can cause a severe allergic reaction in the host (flea allergy dermatitis).
Within 24 hours of its first blood meal, a flea can begin laying eggs, rapidly reaching a rate of 40 to 50 per day, resulting in an infestation that will you will unlikely notice for a couple of weeks until they complete their life cycle.
Its total life span is on average 30-90 days but in ideal conditions can be as long as one year. Female fleas can lay up to 5000 or more eggs over their life, allowing for phenomenal growth rates in any infestation.
FACT: Adult fleas can survive throughout the winter on pets as well as on wildlife.
